We sat down with Mel to learn more about her journey into early childhood education, what motivates her every day, and what makes Futuro Austral such a special place.

Why early learning?

I've always been passionate about working with children and making a meaningful difference in their lives from an early age. Early learning is such a crucial time for development, and I love being part of those foundational years, supporting children as they grow, learn and build confidence.

Being able to create a safe, nurturing environment where children feel valued and supported is what first drew me to this profession.

How has early learning changed since you started?

Early learning has evolved significantly, with a much stronger focus on children's emotional wellbeing, inclusion and recognising every child as an individual learner.

There's now a greater emphasis on building strong partnerships with families, intentional teaching practices, and supporting children's social and emotional development alongside their learning. It's wonderful to see the sector continue to grow in ways that truly benefit children.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing the individual needs of every child, family and educator while maintaining a high-quality learning environment.

Every day brings something different, and there are often situations that require patience, understanding and thoughtful decision-making. While challenging, these moments also provide valuable opportunities for growth and reflection.

The most rewarding part of your role?

The most rewarding part is seeing children grow in confidence and celebrate milestones, both big and small.

Building strong relationships with families and knowing you're making a positive difference in a child's life is incredibly fulfilling. Watching children feel safe, supported and excited to learn makes everything worthwhile.

As a leader, it also makes my heart so happy to see my team feeling supported, confident and succeeding in their roles. Watching them grow and thrive alongside the children is just as rewarding.

Futuro Austral's exceeding achievement

One of Mel's proudest moments has been leading Futuro Austral through its recent Exceeding National Quality Standard rating.

The achievement recognises the team's unwavering commitment to high-quality education and care, meaningful relationships with children and families, and a culture of continuous improvement.

"This achievement belongs to every member of our team. Their passion, commitment and genuine care for our children and families are what make Futuro Austral such a special place. I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together, and we're excited to continue building on this success."

What advice do you have for families?

Trust the process and maintain open communication with your child's educators.

Building a strong partnership between home and the service makes a huge difference in supporting your child's development. I'd also encourage families to celebrate the small moments; they're often the most meaningful.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself continuing to grow within the early childhood sector, further developing my leadership while supporting educators, children and families.

Personally, I hope to continue travelling the world, have a family of my own, and still be a proud member of the Futuro team.
