We're thrilled to welcome Leanne Smith as Centre Manager of our upcoming centre at Leppington Heath Road. With Leanne's wealth of experience establishing 6 new centres and her background as both Area Manager and regulatory expert, we're incredibly fortunate to have her leadership guiding our service!
Why early learning?
I've always been drawn to making a meaningful difference in people's lives. My journey in early childhood began over 15 years ago, and what started as working with children evolved into a passion for building entire communities around them. I discovered that when you create exceptional early learning environments, you're not just educating children, you're supporting families, developing Educators, and strengthening communities. The opportunity to guide new centres from conception to thriving communities has been incredibly fulfilling.
How has early learning changed since you started out?
The transformation has been remarkable! When I began, the focus was much more on basic care. Now we have sophisticated curriculum frameworks, comprehensive assessment processes, and a deep understanding of how early experiences shape lifelong learning. My 5 years with the Department of Education gave me a unique perspective on how regulations have evolved to protect children while raising quality standards. Technology has revolutionised how we document learning and communicate with families, though the fundamental relationship-building remains at the heart of what we do.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
The complexity never stops! As a Centre Manager, especially coming from Area Management, you're balancing multiple priorities simultaneously, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting staff development, meeting family expectations, managing budgets, and maintaining quality standards. These challenges are also the most rewarding to solve because you can see the direct impact on children's lives.
The most rewarding moment in your career so far?
There have been so many! Achieving exceeding ratings across all 7 quality areas at a past centre as the Centre Manager was incredible, but honestly, the most rewarding moments come from seeing the bigger picture impact. I’ve been a part of a struggling centre in the past and watching it transform into a thriving community is pure magic. Working with regulatory authorities, rebuilding family trust, and seeing staff confidence grow through intensive training, with the ultimate end result of thriving happy children, that's when I knew this work truly matters.
What advice do you have for families?
Trust the partnership. Quality early childhood Educators aren't just caring for your children, we're professionals trained to support their development in ways that complement your parenting. When we share observations or suggestions, it comes from experience and genuine care for your child's growth.
Also, remember that consistency between home and centre helps children thrive. We're all on the same team, working toward the same goal: helping your child reach their full potential in a safe, nurturing environment.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I'll always be passionate about early childhood education, though I'm excited about the evolution. I see myself continuing to establish and lead centres that set new standards for quality and innovation. Maybe I'll be mentoring the next generation of Centre Managers, sharing what I've learned about turning challenges into opportunities. The sector needs experienced leaders who understand both the operational complexities and the profound impact we have on families. That's where I want to be, making a lasting difference in early childhood education.
