We're delighted to introduce Karleen, Centre Manager of our Gledswood Hills service.
With over 17 years of experience in early childhood education, Karleen brings a wealth of knowledge, compassion and leadership to the Futuro community. She is passionate about creating meaningful relationships with children, families and educators, and believes every child deserves a safe, supportive environment where they can flourish.
We recently met with Karleen to learn more about her journey, what inspires her every day, and her vision for the future of early learning.
Why early learning?
I've worked in the early learning sector for 17 years, and it really feels like where I'm meant to be. I've always been a nurturing person, and my mum was a teacher, so growing up, I saw firsthand the difference a great educator can make in a child's life.
She definitely inspired me to follow this path. I've been fortunate to work with children of all ages, right through to primary school, and I still love seeing the incredible growth that happens during those early years.
How has early learning changed since you started?
I've seen the sector become much more intentional and reflective.
There's now a stronger focus on children's wellbeing, inclusion, cultural responsiveness and building genuine partnerships with families. The quality of practice has continued to grow, and I think that's had a really positive impact on outcomes for children.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
The hardest part is a bittersweet one - saying goodbye to children and families when it's time for them to move on.
You build such strong relationships over the years and become a part of each other's lives. While it's wonderful to see children ready for their next chapter, it's never easy to say goodbye.
The most rewarding part of your role?
Without a doubt, it's the relationships.
I love working alongside families and building trust with them. Watching children grow in confidence, develop new skills and thrive is incredibly rewarding. Knowing you've played even a small part in their journey is something that's very special to me.
What advice do you have for families?
Trust the process and remember that every child is unique.
Children flourish when families and educators work together, so don't be afraid to share what's important to you or ask questions. Those strong partnerships make such a positive difference.
Most importantly, enjoy the little moments; they grow up so quickly.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I'm currently a Centre Manager and love supporting my team and community, but in the future, I'd love to step into an Area Manager role where I can support multiple services to grow and achieve high-quality outcomes.
I'm also really passionate about reconciliation and would love the opportunity to contribute to work that strengthens reconciliation and embeds meaningful cultural practices across early learning services.
My goal is to continue learning, supporting others, and making a positive impact on children, families, educators and the wider community.
